Israel has launched a series of air strikes on locations associated with the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip area, after militants said to belong to the two outfits launched a series of rocket attacks across the heavily-fortified border this weekend, several news outlets have reported.

According to the New York Times, militants in Gaza fired a total of 250 rockets across the Israeli-Palestinian Territories border, killing a 60-year-old Israeli citizen, Moshe Agadi, when his house in the southern city of Ashkelon. Some rockets were intercepted by the Israeli army and others fell on open ground, the New York Times said. Several Israeli news media however gave a figure of 400 rockets fired into their country’s territory. Planes bombed Gaza City over Friday and this morning, with plumes of smoke spotted across the skyline, AFP (Agence France Presse) reports.

BBC News broadcasts of the Israeli bombardment yesterday evening indicated that a Palestinian mother and her child were killed in the air strikes, which mostly targeted key locations associated with ‘militant groups’ in Gaza City. The Jerusalem Post said that more than 120 positions associated with the Hamas outfit, which governs the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian branch of Islamic Jihad were aimed at by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). The BBC reported today that six people have already died in the revenge raids.

Rockets are regularly fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel as the years-long ‘intifada’ continues its course. In March of this year alone, a hundred missiles launched into Israel by Hamas saw a counter-raid by Israeli warplanes that struck around a hundred Hamas-run positions, while troops were sent en masse to the Gaza frontier. Hamas’ leadership were forced into hiding after those raids, and the Gaza health ministry said five Palestinians died that night, according to British newspaper The Guardian.
