Breaking news from the London newspaper the Evening Standard this morning as the city’s police have opened an investigation after a corpse was found dumped in a wheelie bin behind a Waitrose supermarket in the north of the capital.

Police and forensics teams connected with them sealed off the area behind the store in Tollington Road, Islington, which is near central London, Arsenal football club’s home ground the Emirates Stadium, and also Holloway Road underground metro station.

The body is believed to belong to a man and was discovered just before 4:00 pm yesterday, according to sources. A crime scene was declared shortly afterwards and is still active of this morning, the Evening Standard noted. Pictures of the scene posted online by ‘London 999 Feed’ on the Twitter social network showed police cars parked up on a road at or near the scene and red and white cordon tape had been erected across the street. The photos were attributed to a David Grevett.

A spokesperson representing the Metropolitan Police said the man’s death was unexplained as of publication. She told the Standard: “Police were called to Tollington Road, Islington, shortly before 4pm on Saturday to reports of a man’s body found in a wheelie bin. Officers attended.

“Road closures have been put in place at the scene.

“Detectives are working to establish the man’s identity.

“At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained.”

Wheelie bins are common throughout the UK and are usually supplied by councils and local authorities to householders and businesses for the purposes of rubbish collection. The British English term comes from the wheels at the base of the bin (trash can) which allows the receptacle to be freely moved around.
