WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE: London newspaper to cover opening weekend highlights

London newspaper the Evening Standard is to cover the highlights of one of the biggest tournaments of club-level women’s football this weekend as it reports the thrills and spills of the Women’s Super League (WSL), which is being overseen by the UK’s Football Association (FA), it was announced this morning.

The news organisation, which specialises in news from a Greater London, national and global perspective, will be covering highlights of the tournament live via its website. The campaign kicks off today (Saturday, 7 September 2019) with twelve teams participating, with the favourites, the Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs women’s sides, expecting to build on their successes from last season.


The first matches will be a Manchester derby faceoff between the city’s United and City teams at City’s Etihad Stadium at 3.00 pm British Summer Time, while at the same time, Bristol City and Brighton will clash at Ashton Gate. Arsenal are top of the league tables with fellow Londoners West Ham currently at twelfth and last place.

The Standard is planning to cover all the action via an online sports commentary from its team of sports writers and pundits, as well as offering readers a chance to buy tickets for WSL and Women’s Championship games and advice on how to watch the games live via television and the internet.

Meanwhile, tournament organiser the FA has also announced the launch of its state-of-the-art FA Player service which will show 150 games live and free-to-view as well as selected match with selected match highlights from the Women’s FA Cup, Lionesses games and the FA Women’s Continental League Cup, starting from today. The FA has also signed a number of deals to show the tournament abroad, with the profits going towards developing British women’s football.
