The American president Donald Trump plans to make an official state visit to the United Kingdom some time before Britain’s general election which will be held on December 12, according to sources in the White House as reported by the breaking news team at British paper the Evening Standard.
The leader will stay over for two days from 2-4 December to attend a meeting chaired by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), an international alliance consisting of 29 member states from North America and Europe.
Trump intends to discuss with his NATO partners defence spending and addressing threats “emanating from cyberspace, those affecting our critical infrastructure and telecommunications networks, and those posed by terrorism” according to a White House statement seen by the newspaper. The meeting will take place at the Grove Hotel in the Hertfordshire city of Watford, 20 miles (32 kilometres) from the capital London. This will be the current president’s third trip to the UK. His previous visits have seen massive protests by people opposed to his presidency and politics, such as his stance on immigration and the infamous ‘Muslim visa ban’.
The presidential office statement further added: “President Donald J Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will travel to the United Kingdom from December 2 to 4, 2019, to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Leaders Meeting and a reception hosted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.
‘Seventy years after its founding, NATO remains the most successful Alliance in history, guaranteeing the security, prosperity, and freedom of its members.’
‘President Trump looks forward to meeting with the other NATO Heads of State and government to review the Alliance’s unprecedented progress on burden-sharing, including adding more than $100 billion in new defence spending since 2016.’
‘The President will also emphasise the need for the NATO Alliance to ensure its readiness for the threats of tomorrow, including those emanating from cyberspace, those affecting our critical infrastructure and telecommunications networks, and those posed by terrorism.”
