(CNN)In an attempt to slash the wide-ranging impacts of plastic pollution, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law the country’s most sweeping restrictions on single-use plastics and packaging on Thursday, the same day the Supreme Court limited the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to tackle the worsening climate crisis. The law requires that single-use packaging and plastic single-use food serviceware be recyclable or compostable by 2032. It also requires by 2032 a 25% reduction in the sales of plastic packaging and for 65% of all single-use plastic packaging to be recycled. And it establishes an accountability group, which will include industry representatives, to run a new recycling program overseen by the state – Single-use plastic waste is getting phased out in California under a sweeping new law (CNN US)

(CNN)A large group of people carrying flags and shields marched along downtown Boston’s Freedom Trail Saturday, according to the Boston Police Department — and video footage of the group obtained by CNN shows the flags bearing the symbol of the White nationalist Patriot Front group. Police received a call at 12:30 p.m. that around 100 people were protesting, walking on Congress Street toward the Old State House and City Hall Plaza, BPD Officer Kim Tavares told CNN. No arrests were made, nor was their route known, Tavares said. The group eventually boarded a train and departed from the scene, the officer added.
Social media video posted online shows dozens of individuals clutching shields and at least two different flags, including Patriot Front flags and upside-down US flags. Last month, a group believed to be affiliated with the Patriot Front was arrested after authorities said they planned to riot at a Pride event in Idaho – Group wielding White nationalist flags march along Boston’s Freedom Trail on July 4 weekend (CNN US)

A group of educators in Texas proposed referring to slavery as “involuntary relocation” in second-grade classes – before being rebuffed by the State Board of Education. Part of the proposed draft standards for the curriculum directed students to “compare journeys to America, including voluntary Irish immigration and involuntary relocation of African people during colonial times,” the Texas Tribune reported and Davis confirmed to The Post. She said that such comparisons were “absolutely” not fair. The chair of the State Board of Education, Keven Ellis, told The Washington Post in a statement that the board “voted unanimously to send the language back to be reworked.” Adding, “This board is committed to the truth, which includes accurate descriptions of historical events.” He said there had been no attempt to “hide the truth from Texas second-graders about slavery.” In a statement posted on Twitter on Thursday, the Texas Education Agency responded to the backlash the proposal had created. CLEVELAND, Ohio – Black Lives Matter and the NAACP have organized rallies in Akron this weekend in support of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old man fatally shot by eight Akron police officers. Walker’s family’s attorney, Bobby DiCello, said officers shot 90 times, hitting Walker 60 times in the face, abdomen, buttocks, back, both arms and both legs, as he fled after a chase that ended about 12:30 a.m. Monday in a Main Street parking lot in the city’s Firestone Park neighborhood. Police say officers shot Walker after a gun was fired from his car, but have released few details, including the names of the officers or how many shots were fired. “Tragically, we are once again faced with a young man, with his life before him, gone too soon. Every single life is precious, and the loss of any life is absolutely devastating to our entire community. Our prayers are with Jayland Walker’s loved ones, and we offer our sincere condolences to all those who knew him. Our thoughts are also with our Akron police officers and their families.” Summit County Black officials, advocacy groups push for justice for Jayland Walker, killed by Akron police officers – Akron rallies planned for Jayland Walker, as family attorney says police shot him 60 times ( ~ Akron)
