Good morning. This Sunday we take our news from SPIDR US edition.
Updated Nov 20, 2022, 03:12am EST. Elon Musk on Saturday restored former President Donald Trump’s account on Twitter after conducting a poll on the platform, a move that comes weeks after the billionaire promised to build a moderation council made up of “diverse viewpoints” to take such decisions. More than 15 million Twitter users voted in a poll where Musk asked if Trump should be allowed back on the platform with 51.8% voting yes. Anti Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt immediately criticized Musk’s decision to restore Trump’s account tweeting: “For Elon Musk to allow Donald Trump back on Twitter, ostensibly after a brief poll, shows he is not remotely serious about safeguarding the platform from hate, harassment and misinformation. Trump used Twitter to foment intolerance, issue threats and incite a violent attack against the US government. Moreover, he has shown no indication that he would do anything different if given the opportunity.” Musk responded by tweeting “Hey stop defaming me!” at Greenblatt. After acquiring Twitter late last month, Musk had promised to set up a moderation council with “widely diverse viewpoints” which would advise the company on content decisions and account reinstatement. The restoration of Trump’s account does not come as a surprise as Musk had alluded to this possibility several months ago, calling the ban “morally wrong.” While the Twitter deal was being negotiated, Musk exchanged texts with former CEO Parag Agrawal in which he indicated he intends to reinstate all accounts that have been permanently banned, with the expectation of spam accounts and ones that “explicitly advocate violence.” The removal of bans are part of the billionaire’s vision to turn Twitter into a “free speech” haven – Elon Musk Reinstates Donald Trump’s Twitter Account After Asking Users To Vote (Forbes ~ Breaking – Business)

Donald Trump has been officially reinstated to Twitter but on Saturday afternoon the former president cast doubt that he would return to the platform. Trump posted on Truth Social, a social media service he has used since receiving a lifetime ban on Twitter in January 2021, that he would not be switching back over. Twitter CEO Elon Musk formally reinstated Trump this weekend after conducting a poll on the platform that received more than 15 million votes. Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk has said Donald Trump’s account has been reinstated after running a poll in which users narrowly backed the move. “The people have spoken,” tweeted Mr Musk, saying that 51.8% of more than 15 million Twitter users voted for the ban to be lifted. With just over a week before the US midterm elections on 8 November, he responded to questions about whether he would reinstate Mr Trump’s account by tweeting: “If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if Trump is coming back on this platform, Twitter would be minting money!”. Donald Trump knew this poll was significant – even though his official position is that he doesn’t want to return to Twitter. Musk, Twitter’s controversial new owner, reinstated Trump’s account after 51% of those responding to a Twitter poll voted in favor of his return. Twitter banned Trump’s account after a pro-Trump mob attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as Congress was in session to certify President Joe Biden’s election victory. It is not immediately clear whether Trump intends to return to Twitter. “I hear we’re getting a big vote to also go back on Twitter. I don’t see it because I don’t see any reason for it,” Trump said Saturday.
