BLOGLOVIN’: HEM News Agency joins bloggers’ network

HEM News Agency is now an official member of the blogging networking site Bloglovin’. I signed up quickly last weekend and made my blog’s record there official.

Bloglovin’, established in a Swedish garage in 2007, is a platform that enables bloggers and non-bloggers alike to curate, follow and keep up with their favourite blogs, ranging from the postings of leading organisations such as the BBC (the first blog HEMNA has followed) through to small mummy blogs and personal online diaries. The site now has more than 16 million people signed up and has reached such heights that it is said to host its own blogging awards ceremony annually in New York.

Under its previous incarnation as ‘Half-Eaten Mind’, HEMNA has signed up with a select handful of blog platforms over the years, such as Blogarama and the now closed Technorati, but the returns from those websites were quite poor. I joined Bloglovin’ to give the blog more exposure and attract new followers, as well as give existing ones a new way to keep track of our news and other posts.

If you are a member of Bloglovin’ and wish to follow us there, please take a look at our official Bloglovin’ page: bloglovin.com/blogs/hem-news-agency-11295563/

You can show your appreciation of our posts by clicking the little white and blue heart button to give some love, and use the other buttons to share our articles via Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and email. There is also the option of saving articles for future reference at a time that suits you.

SOCIAL HOUSING: British government launches report on tenant experiences, housing reforms

London – VIJAY SHAH

The UK Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has unveiled a report detailing the experiences of people living in social housing and the inequalities and stigma they face as social tenants, HEM News Agency exclusively reports.

Ministers with the MHCLG, formerly the Department for Communities and Local Government, launched through their social media outlets a document, the ‘Social Housing Green Paper‘, as part of an ambition to tackle the widespread stigma against families and individuals residing in council-owned and housing association-owned properties and estates. The paper also highlights the government’s intention to give support to ‘thriving communities’ based around social housing in the United Kingdom.

The green paper forms part of the governmental open consultation on a ‘new deal for social housing’, which may signal a change of direction for the country’s ruling Conservatives, who have been castigated by liberal sections of British society for enacting policies that have targeted the welfare state , an attack on the poor and deprived, according to critics of government policy.

In it, the MHCLG has proposed ‘fundamental reforms’ in the social housing sector in order to benefit users, give greater rights and voices to renters and to re-balance the relationship between tenants and landlords, as the national housing crisis forces more and more to rent from private landlords and associations.

The paper also proposes changes to the controversial ‘Right to Buy’ policy. Instituted by the late prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, in the 1980s, this policy allowed council tenants to buy their rented homes direct from the council, but has been criticised for causing a explosion in sometimes exploitative buy-to-lets and reductions in the numbers of available social housing. One change put forward is to give local government bodies greater powers to replace homes purchased by former tenants.

The paper was released today on the UK government’s official online portal, along with a promotional video which summed up the main points of the consultation document.

MAURITIUS’ 50TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY: Massive family party launched

London – VIJAY SHAH

The organisers behind the Mauritian Open Air Festival, a yearly event celebrating Mauritian food, culture and general family entertainment and held in north London, have announced a special ‘family party’ this March, HEM News Agency exclusively reports.

The special event will be held on the 10 March 2018 at the Decorum Banqueting Suites in Wood Green, north London, just two days before the island of Mauritius itself marks a half-century of free rule. Previously the country of 1.8 million people was an outpost of the British Empire.

Celebrations will take place against the backdrop of a live concert by the Omaz Sega Band, performing the national music of Mauritius, séga. For patrons, there will also be a fully-licensed and stocked bar and Mauritian snacks on offer. There will also be tight security and a smart dress code enforced. The event will also be sponsored by a handful of Mauritius-connected companies, including the national airline of the country, Air Mauritius.

HIS EXCELLENCY PIKACHU: Japan foreign minister appoints children’s characters as ambassadors

Osaka – VIJAY SHAH via RAMIN NASIBOV, VICTORIA HO and Mashable

In a very ordinary development from Japan this past week, the country’s foreign minister Taro Kano appointed popular children’s characters Pikachu, from the cult series Pokémon alongside Hello Kitty as official ambassadors for the city of Osaka, Mashable online magazine reported yesterday.

In honour of their role in publicising Japan around the world, the foreign minister, who is a representative of the Liberal Democratic Party, announced in an English message on the 29th November, that Pikachu and Hello Kitty would represent Osaka in its bid to host the World Expo 2025. Accompanying the tweet were two photos of Kono handing official dossiers of appointment to two individuals dressed in the children’s cartoon character costumes.

Hello Kitty, designed by Yuko Shimizu for Sanrio, has been adored by countless girls and boys since 1974, while Pikachu, the lead character of the animated Pokémon series and friend of human youngster Ash Ketchum, who always chooses him to battle other Pokemon, will be considerably pleased at being chosen for this prestigious appointment by the government of Japan. Pikachu first appeared on a video game in 1996 and the TV cartoon became a defining memory of the late 1990s and early 2000s

The appointments come as Osaka vies for the chance to host the 2025 Expo alongside three other nominated cities, Paris, France; Yekaterinburg, Russia; and Baku, Azerbaijan. If Osaka does win the bid, it will be next in line after Dubai hosts the 2020 event. The winner will be announced in November 2018.

GRENFELL TRAGEDY: Police confirm 58 residents missing, possibly dead

London – VIJAY SHAH via Twitter

This week, a devastating fire tore through the Grenfell Tower, a residential block located in Kensington, London, causing major loss of life and homelessness in the early hours of June 14, 2017. A fire believed to have originated from an exploding fridge in a fourth-floor flat then spread rapidly through the 1970s tenement, housing mainly poorer Londoners. Aluminium cladding fixed to the outside of Grenfell Tower, which sits on the Lancaster West housing estate, and which was intended to smarten the structure’s appearance, may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, trapping families and others behind thick smoke and burning debris.

According to the latest reports coming off of Twitter, London’s police authority, the Metropolitan Police service, believe that 58 Grenfell Tower residents are still missing, presumed deceased. The police force’s commander, Stuart Cundy, announced the figures via the social media website in the past hour. So far around 30 people are known to have died, but Cundy has warned that the figure is expected to rise, as firefighters comb through the gutted tower block.

Searches for the missing and dead were taking place yesterday, but were halted temporarily for safety reasons, but are resuming today. The Met have also promised families of the missing that “…. as soon as we can, we will locate and recover their loved ones”, according to tweeter Molly Hunter.

The government of British prime minister Theresa May has found itself under increasing pressure over its regulations governing safety provisions for the country’s, 4,000 or so tower blocks. Protests have taken place in Kensington itself and in central London demanding answers and justice for the victims.
