STRATFORD CENTRE: Six people hurt in fight and acid attack near shopping mall

Six men were reported injured after a ‘noxious substance’ was thrown in a street fight near the Stratford Centre shopping arcade in Stratford, east London yesterday at around 8 pm, Sky News said today.

The incident occurred near to a Subway restaurant on the Broadway, close to Stratford’s bus station and the Westfield Stratford City retail complex. Three of the individuals needed hospital treatment after having a chemical thrown on them during the mêlée between two separate groups of males, Sky News reported. A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Shoppers saw one man in agony as friends called for help by shouting “it is an acid attack, his skin is burning”. People rushed to the scene with water to ease the man’s chemical burns, according to the broadcaster.

One eyewitness, an assistant manager of a local Burger King restaurant who only gave his name as Hossen, told Sky News that he saw a victim and another male believed to be the victim’s friend, run into his restaurant and then to its washroom, desperate to wash off the corrosive chemical. Hossen said “There were cuts around his eyes and he was trying to chuck water into them”

The area where the fight took place was quickly cordoned off and treatment offered to the victims. Police, paramedics and fire crews all attended within 10 minutes. Paul Gibson, an assistant director of operations with the London Ambulance Service, said: “We treated six patients in total  and took three to London hospitals”.

Stratford administratively falls under the London Borough of Newham, and the borough’s police chief superintendent, Ade Adelekan, said: “I would like to be very clear concerning this incident.

“What initially may have been perceived as a number of random attacks has, on closer inspection, been found to be one incident involving two groups of males”.

Sky News reports that none of the men suffered serious harm in the street fight.

Attacks on people by assailants with chemicals such as sulphuric acid, bleach and drain cleaner were once associated with honour attacks in places like South Asia, but have become increasingly common in London, due to the ease of buying and carrying around dangerous chemicals, and the punishment for such attacks is less severe than assaults with knives or guns.

In June, 21-year-old student and model Resham Khan was travelling in Newham’s Beckton area with her cousin, Jameel Mukhtar, when an assailant flung acid in their faces while they were waiting at traffic lights. Even as far as back as 2011, a mother had acid splashed at her while walking her two children home from school in Upton Park. Latest figures published by the Evening Standard suggest a quarter of all acid attacks in London this year have occurred within Newham’s boundaries.

CHARLOTTE HIGH SCHOOL FIGHT: Clash between American schoolchildren; officer caught on camera as police intervene

Charlotte, UNITED STATES
VIJAY SHAH via News Locker, Mirror Online and WSOCTV

British newspaper The Daily Mirror reports today on a shocking video of students fighting at a high school in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

The ‘brutal’ and ‘savage’ brawl led to the arrest of a 15-year-old pupil as well as the discovery of a set of brass knuckles by the school’s policing team after the fight took place, putting the school on lockdown.

The video footage shows the fight being broken up by a school police officer at Harding University High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. The officer is seen struggling with the student before placing him in handcuffs. Students scream and curse as arms go flying. The officer is seen grappling with and restraining the pupil who is later seen lying on the floor, as another student off-camera shouts “Get off of him”, as a large crowd assembled. Local news station TWC News reported that brass knuckles were later found among the pupil’s possessions in the clearup after the fight, suggesting perhaps that the disorder was preplanned.

Stunned by the incident, and amid increasing violence involving weaponry in schools all over the developed world, parents of pupils at Harding University High had expressed their concerns over safety. One parent told WSOCTV news station that she wanted to see security at the school ‘beefed-up’.

“It’s difficult, because it seems like the same problem keeps happening over and over again,” said the parent.

The student has been charged with assault on a police officer, simple assault, resisting arrest, and weapons charges. For reasons of age, his name and other particulars had not been reported.

The school’s principal (headteacher) Eric Ward issued a statement regarding the fight. In it he said “Several students became engaged in a physical altercation during transition to third period.”

“The altercation was a serious one and one of our school resource officers and several staff members intervened to break up the situation and restore order.

“I take this incident and any issues involving student and staff safety at our school very seriously.

“School staff and CMPD (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department) are determining further details and disciplinary action will be taken as necessary.”

It is not known if any other students have been arrested or expelled from school over the incident. The officer is also under investigation, according to WSOCTV.

BOXING: Mayweather to take on Pacquiao at last

American ‘pound-for-pound‘ king of the boxing ring Floyd Mayweather Jr. has announced that after a two-year wait, he will finally face up to rival Manny Pacquiao, the U.S. sports news network ESPN reports. Fans of the heavyweight have long wanted him to clash with the Filipino, but Mayweather had been putting off the chance of a match between the two legends until yesterday night due to collapsed negotiations and busy fighting schedules.

During a televised interview with the Showtime boxing channel held in the Texan city of San Antonio, Mayweather announced that he will insist on sparring with Pacquiao in his next bout. He plans to schedule the fight for the May 2 weekend next year and it will occur around the same time as the Cinco de Mayo Mexican festival, a time when Mayweather has some of his biggest and most prestigious fights.

We are ready. Let’s make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let’s do it,” Mayweather said in that interview last night as he threw down a challenge to square up to Pacquiao and as his promotional company was doing the rounds in promoting their star fighter for the next stage in the boxing season.

Manny Pacquiao, who is also a politician and actor in his native country, had recently disposed of Chris Algieri six times over in a ‘near-shutout decision’ on the 22nd of November. That victory helped Pacquiao retain his welterweight title belt and the athlete has now once again turned his attention to his nemesis Mayweather. Pacquiao appeared recently in an advert by sportswear retailer Foot Locker alongside Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, where he launched a ‘verbal offensive’ to turn up the heat on the American and get them trading blows at last. Pacquiao used the opportunity to mock Mayweather for being reluctant to accept the challenge up until now and Mayweather’s army of fans have also being applying pressure on the Grand Rapids-born superstar to make happen what many describe as the boxing match of the century, according to ESPN.

Boxing fans have been clamouring for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight since 2009 and several negotiations between the two camps have taken place over the last five years, but with no success. One group of meetings between the two boxers that took place over 2009 and 2010 involved a compulsory drug-testing formality as part of the proceedings but the talks were scuppered and not much has happened since until last Friday and Mayweather’s spectacularly determined response.

I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao. We tried to make the fight happen years ago; we had problems with random blood and urine testing. “I just want to be on an even playing field. Now he’s in a very, very tight situation. He’s lost to [Juan Manuel] Marquez [in 2012], he’s lost to [Timothy] Bradley [by controversial decision in 2012 but avenged it in April]. Pay-per-view numbers are extremely low. He’s desperate. I wanted that fight a long time ago. I’m just waiting on them.” Mayweather explained to ESPN.

Floyd Mayweather is not ducking or dodging any opponent. Bob Arum is stopping the fight. We have been trying to make this fight happen behind the scenes for years now, but the fans and the people have been fooled because they have been listening to people just on one side. Now it’s time for us to talk. We want the fight.”

Asked about his chief motivation for now wanting to take on Pacquiao, Mayweather told ESPN, “I know that he’s not on my level. The fans would love to see the fight. And, of course, I want to go out with a bang.” He then addressed Pacquiao and his manager directly.

So let’s make this fight happen. Manny Pacquiao, Bob Arum, you guys have been ducking us for years,” Mayweather said. “We’re tired of you guys fooling the public, fooling the critics. You guys didn’t want to take random blood and urine testing, so that’s why it didn’t happen. Then I offered you $40 million, then you didn’t want to make the fight happen. You lost twice, now you coming back begging for the same money. That’s not gonna happen. Let’s make the fight happen for the people and the fans. Mayweather versus Pacquiao, May 2nd, Cinco de Mayweather.”
