SUBLETTING: Newham tenant jailed for illegally renting out council house

A tenant living in a council-owned property in east London has been sent to jail after he was discovered to have been illegally renting out his home against council rules, the Newham Mag reported this weekend. Mubato Nzabi, aged 48, was caught out by council housing inspectors in the borough of Newham, and was subsequently convicted at Wood Green Crown Court in north London of illegally subletting a three-bedroom council house in Ordnance Road, Canning Town, in the south of the borough. GREEN STREET: Fun at the Market

Newham’s only closed marketplace, Queen’s Market in Green Street, played host to a special sporting extravaganza this past month where 300 local residents came to try their hand at fun and games courtesy of a community neighbourhood group, reports the Newham Mag. NEWHAM RECYCLING: Council leaflets residents on recycling policy

Newham Council, the local government body in charge of the east London borough of Newham, has recently leafletted thousands of homes advising residents on what items they can place in their recycling bins. This is part of the council’s continuing drive to increase both recycling rates and awareness among the borough’s more than 150,000 residents. All households in Newham are provided with two wheelie bins free of charge by the council. One, coloured dark green, is intended for general waste, such as food, garden waste and non-recyclable items. Newham Council, the local governing authority for the borough of Newham in east London, has had its attempt to stop a bookmakers opening in one of the borough’s popular shopping streets overturned by a magistrate. Betting shop company Paddy Power, one of the largest providers of gaming services in the British Isles, had earmarked the site of a former restaurant at the junction of Green Street and Plashet Grove to open a betting shop in its bid to attract punters in the Upton Park area.
