The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), central to the debate over COVID-19’s origins, has been suspended from U.S. funding opportunities by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The suspension is due to the WIV’s violation of the National Institutes of Health’s biosafety rules and failure to provide documentation on biosafety protocols and security measures. The NIH concluded that WIV’s research likely violated biosafety protocols, prompting the HHS to take “immediate action to protect the public interest.” The WIV, previously funded through EcoHealth Alliance, has not received NIH funding since the summer of 2020, and the suspension makes it ineligible for future federal awards. The WIV has 30 days to respond, and if they don’t, proceedings will begin to ban them longer term – US halts funding access to Wuhan lab at heart of COVID-19 origins debate (ABC News)
