HUG AWARD: Half-Eaten Mind nominated for its first bloggers’ award

This past week the Half-Eaten Mind has been nominated for its first ever award, the HUG Award, which is gifted to bloggers who help spread compassion, hope and other positive human qualities through their writing.

HEM was nominated by supporter Kavita Joshi, an Australian-based travel writer and photographer who runs the Talking Experiences blog, a diary of her travels around Asia as well as a commentary on ordinary thoughts on everyday life.

The Hope Unites Globally HUG Award is an initiative of Connie Wayne, grandmother and hope enthusiast. She set up the “A Hope For Today” website and blog in 2011 to help recognise the efforts of bloggers who bring hope into the lives of readers through thought-provoking and uplifting articles. A spiritual person, Wayne enjoys spending time on her blog writing on positive topics that inspire hope and spiritual re-invigoration.

After witnessing the intense suffering of people who found themselves in utter desperation while working in social services and in a Christian pastoral ministry, Connie Wayne used her experiences of working with the homeless, domestic abuse victims and people with financial difficulties to set up A Hope For Today. These expereinces also helped Wayne to reinvent herself as a “an enthusiast, catalyst, and visionary for hope“.

Nominees for the HUG Award can be anyone who helps give others hope, either through their actions or the blogposts they publish. The award is not restricted to bloggers but can be given to anyone who has helped bring hope into other people’s lives, with anything from voluntary work to supporting ill family members or campaigning for a cause.

Bloggers who are nominated for the HUG Award are recognised for penning articles, poems or stories that offer universal messages of hope for today’s often dysfunctional world. The award also recognises bloggers who promote hope, peace, love, equality and unity, and is open to anyone, regardless of religion, race, political views, age, gender or sexual orientation.

As we live in a world where poverty, desperation, anger, violence, war and the breakdown of society have become common themes in our observances, and the tensions in the Korean peninsula are potentially bringing humanity to the possible brink of a nuclear apocalypse, it is now vital more than ever that writers like Ms. Wayne continue to spread such important and humane messages to try to better society in the little way they can. Society needs the strength that hope brings more than ever, if we are not to lose our footing and immerse ourselves into a fatalistic and destructive bottomless pit of social disintegration, of which escape can be only a doomed dream.
